UP Police has the distinction of being the largest force in the world working under a single command. The department is gearing up to face the challenges of policing in the next millennium by rapidly modernizing and strengthening its resources. Uttar Pradesh Police Head Quarter needed a mechanism through which crime intensity at all the districts of can be viewed.

Objectives

•	Murder, theft, robbery etc are displayed in different colors.
•	Intensity of crime should be displayed by the depth of the color i.e. if red color indicates murder then lighter shades of red should indicate smaller number of murders and deeper red indicate higher number of murders recorded.
•	Easy interface to enter crime details.
•	Graphic reporting on Map of the state with boundaries clearly demarcated.
•	Areas defined into Districts, Zone and Range.
•	Comparison of crime intensity between zones, between ranges and between districts.
•	As soon as mouse is taken over a location in map, the crime details of corresponding district should be displayed.
•	Period wise comparison for a district or range or zone.
•	Should be able to highlight a district on the map by entering name

Services provided by MARG

MARG team familiarized itself with the organization's objectives, policies, systems, procedures, reporting structure, and functional areas.

The consultants then highlighted the objectives of the corporation, identified problem areas, and analyzed the information flow at various levels to ensure that application was consistent with the corporation's goals and that there would be no roadblocks in the implementation process.

Thereafter, the key areas of responsibility within the corporation were analyzed so that the information needs could be graded.

A measure of flexibility was built into the system for enhancing the degree of computerization over time. The manpower training requirements of ‘Crime mapping application’ were also specified.

Solution

Application was developed using Macromedia Flash Player 7.0.
An application developed in Visual Basic 6.0 was installed at all the district offices to take the input and generate action scripts.
Action scripts are uploaded at the web to be used by the flash presentation.
